The Nothing

SMOG CITY- “The Nothing”

Double Chocolate Imperial Stout

9.6% abv

An extremely dark and rich strong stout brewed with 2 types of chocolate malt and aged on 2 types of cacao nibs.

With an aroma of raw cocoa and a pointed nuttiness, this full bodied black ale has a subtle chocolate cake sweetness and intense dark chocolate flavors.  Finishes fairly dry with light roast and a lingering cocoa powder aftertaste.

A strong stout with intense dark chocolate and cocoa flavors.

Buzz words: Strong, dark, Imperial Stout, DARK CHOCOLATE, chocolate, cocoa, cocoa powder, subtle sweetness, balanced bitterness…

WHAT THE HECK ARE CACAO NIBS? “Cacao nibs are basically raw chocolate, pieces of cacao beans that have been roasted, hulled and prepped to the point where all that there is left to do is process them into bars. The chocolate-making process involves grinding up the cacao into a thick paste to which extra cacao butter, sugar, milk and other flavorings are added.” Thanks!

WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM? The Nothing is named for its deep rich blackness; this beer reminded Smog City’s brewer, Porter, of The Nothing from The NeverEnding Story. Popular misconception: Gmork, the wolf-like villain in the movie is often mistaken for The Nothing. No pictures exist of The Nothing, as it is literally the absence of something…like the color white!

We’ve Got Rebar!

Went to visit the brewery to see if we had any leaks during these recent rainstorms and was surprised to find all of our concrete guys hard at work! I wasn’t sure whether to do a happy dance or apologize for having them work on Christmas Eve. I did a little bit of both for good measure.

Happy to report that the sand is down and they are laying rebar. We’re also got our two hot water heaters up! Looks like we’ll be pouring concrete at the start of the new year.

Happy Holidays Everyone!!

Another View Down the Line

Construction Continues

Construction is moving along smoothly. We’ve had good fortune with the rains and that has sped up some of our work but we will lose a little momentum over the holidays as everyone is off celebrating but schedule says we’ll be pouring cement as early as January 2nd, 2013. Let’s do this!!

Yesterday the guys were finishing up grading the dirt and all three trenches were in place. Rebar goes down next, then inspection, holiday festivities, and then cement! Can’t wait to have a nice clean-ish floor come the first of 2013.

In other brewing news, our tanks shipped from Hungary yesterday! Now they begin their month-long voyage across the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal and up to the L.A. Harbor. Fingers crossed, they travel safely without incident! Bon Voyage!

Here's a view from above! We now have fully graded dirt, the floors all clean and three trench drains in place.

Entrenched in Trenches

We’re about two weeks into construction, demolition is completed and the trenches are being dug. We hear that the plumber is going to begin laying pipe and setting the trenches TOMORROW.

Laurie promises to get down there with her camera soon and document a little better but for the time being, here’s a glimpse at what’s going on at the brewery.

Day 2 of Demolition

Moving along swiftly! I wasn’t sure what Emmett and I would find when we went to the brewery but this was not what I imagined. They have done much more than I thought possible in just one day. If I blink, they might finish up before we know it. If only…
