Finally another in the Smog City line up is going into bottles! Sabre-Toothed Squirrel, our hoppy Amber (7.0% abv) is releasing at the taproom and into the greater L.A. market on Wednesday, Nov 12th.

To get you acquainted with the label, we thought it would be fun to point out a few things specific to the new art.

Our personal favorite and most obvious is the chipper and mischievous squirrel. Huge eyes, puppy dog sized feet with gigantic not-messing-around claws and fangs. He’s a snarky one and oh so drinkable! We like to describe Squirrel around the brewery as a “cute and cuddle Amber WITH A HOPPY BITE!”. Surrounding our hero are hints of the aromas and character of the beer…pine and citrus and of course hops are key components of the beer’s overall character and NO! no butterflies were harmed in the making of this beer, we promise. Unless you think that makes it more exotic and more desirable…then maybe the story goes: one flew into the mash. You decide.

Upon inspection, you’ll perhaps have noticed the difference between the Smog City circle on the left part of the label, it’s a solid circle whereas in Coffee Porter it was a coffee stain. It’s the little things that make us happy and we hope you enjoy them too. The labels are sprinkled with them.

Why is there a made-up Latin name for the Saber-Toothed Squirrel? Well, we thought that would be fun! In this National Geo Article they used Sabre-Toothed Squirrel Latin name: Cronopio dentiacutus, which just lent itself to a slight Hop and Malt adjustment…hence Hopopio Maltocutus. That Squirrel is so damn cute. Don’t you think? The history of the naming of Sabre-Toothed Squirrel…it’s here.

On each of our core labels we include a small drawing that further hints at the aromas and character within. Coffee was a steaming coffee cup, Squirrel has pine, citrus and hops, Hoptonic IPA will be…oh, wouldn’t you like to know…

One of our favorite aspects of the label is ultra subtle and really just insider info, you’d never know unless we told you. Our designer’s great Aunt owned a general store in the late 1800’s. This is a scanned page from her general ledger. The only adjustment we made was the 2011(which is a composite of her writing) and marks the year we started Smog City Brewing. We love celebrating The Craft: the craft of beer, or woodworking, or handwritten letters and ledgers which are now a thing of the past. Pulling from our designer’s only family history we get to include him in our process just as he contributes his art to our craft and therefore celebrates the creation of all things hand-made.

Okay, all the label art aside, we hope you enjoy this extremely approachable Amber. It sates the hop heads and its balanced complex caramel and toffee sweetness pleases the foodies. We hope this will quickly become your NEW go-to beer!

Bottles will be available in our taproom Nov 12th, 4-9pm and ever onward.

Cheers!

Laurie, Porter and the Smog City Team
