2015 GABF SILVER for Smog’s Kumquat Saison and TWO Bottle Releases!

Kumquat Saison

Making the home team proud!

Someone must have slipped the “Good Timing” Gods a tenner, cause we just won a medal for Kumquat Saison and this weekend, Saturday Oct 3rd, we are releasing it in bottles and serving it on draft in the taproom. Timing couldn’t have been better!

Needless to say, we haven’t stopped celebrating and we would love to continue the celebration of this SILVER at GABF 2015 in the Belgian- Style Fruit Beer Category with you…on Saturday…in our taproom. You in?!

What’s the Great American Beer Fest, you say? Well, it’s the single biggest all American Craft Brewery competition, we like to compare it to winning an Oscar. Follow the GABF link and read more and maybe next year, you’ll join us in Denver!

Back to the Quat!

As a quick recap, Kumquat Saison was born 3 years ago from a tree in Porter and Laurie’s backyard. Originally, this limited fruited saison was a small batch, once a year experimental beer. It is now the cornerstone to a wonderful partnership we launched this year with Food Forward, the non-profit gleaning company that harvests fruit from local backyard trees and salvages throw aways at the L.A. Wholesale market. Food Forward donates to local food banks and shelters and is constantly giving back to the community. Currently, FF clocks in over 13 million pounds of salvaged fruit in 2015! For those of you that don’t do math, that’s a lot of “doing good”. To learn more about our partnership check out this blog I did when the first batch released.

Luckily for Smog City and all of you, kumquats are a highly productive citrus with very limited use. I’d venture that there’s no better use than to make beer with kumquats but I think I’m only slightly biased here.

Beyond just being extraordinarily proud to see this beer medal at GABF, we are even more excited because it is a true passion project of Laurie and Porter’s. More hands contributed to and “crafted” this beer than any other Smog City beer and it truly speaks to the community building benefits of the craft beer movement. I’m convinced that this is our secret ingredient…

These three contributed 250 lbs of kumquats (from one tree) to the first batch! Lorna’s husband (not pictured) planted their kumquat tree in the early 50’s. Wild.

More on Kumquat Saison hère from the LA Times.

To make this weekend’s bottle release a little “sweeter”…We’re releasing a limited amount of Hive Five, honey beer, in bottles on the very same day. That’s right! Two bottle releases in one day. Yay!

LA Beer Week 2013 the LA Brewer’s Guild breweries brewed beers across the county using a common ingredient, honey. Porter fell in love with brewing with honey and specifically with this beer. 2 years later, we’ve decided to bring it back for a limited run.

Hive Five is made using 5 different kinds of locally sourced honeys: Eucalyptus, Avocado, Wild Flower, Buckwheat and Coastal Wild Flower.

Hive Five boasts intense honey aromas and sweetness without being overly sweet. Very floral and fruity with a beautifully balanced malt character.

Food Forward and Smog City Combine Efforts! And Our Kumquat Saison is Born

15 trees, 800 lbs of kumquats, dozens of volunteers, 5 brewers, 5 weeks, an industrial immersion blender and a vision. If this Kumquat Saison doesn’t become your benchmark for spring beers, nothing will.

For years, we at Smog City Brewing have sought to partner with a likeminded non-profit. We participate in dozens of charitable events and support dozens of non-profits every year but the ultimate goal has been to find one that mirrored our goals, our company ethos, and felt like a kinship brand. After 3.5 years of looking, we have found a non-profit we are extremely proud to put our support and weight behind. This Saturday, Smog City and Food Forward will debut our first collaborative fruit beer, Kumquat Saison, at the sold out Spring Melt Gala Fundraiser and Smog City’s Taproom.

Food Forward is a non-profit dedicated to collecting and distributing fruit and vegetables that would otherwise go unused. The fruit is collected from people’s backyards and farmers markets, they harvest from local farmers who have an overabundance of produce and make sure that potentially wasted food is distributed to food banks and shelters across the city. Food Forward combines so many of our favorite things into one company; giving back to the community, gardening and harvesting, a family of incredible volunteers and direct contact with producers of our favorite thing: fresh food!

So why are we taking fruit from Food Forward to make beer? Well, kumquat trees happen to be a high yield/low use fruit tree…there’s not much we can do with them except appreciate their decorative aspects and (in our humble opinion) MAKE BEER. So, through the partnership with Food Forward, we are able to produce an incredibly unique beer and make good use of a fruit that often goes to waste. Plus through proceeds generated by bottle and taproom sales, we can give back. It’s a win win for all involved.

Through our combined efforts and the generosity of kumquat trees owners throughout the greater L.A. area, we have produced 20 bbl of Kumquat Saison using just about 800 lbs of locally harvested kumquats. This is 14 times more delicious Kumquat Saison than we have ever made at one time! Some trees yielded 60 lbs, some 45 lbs and one tree in Downey gave us a whopping 250 lbs of kumquats in one pick.

Let’s get to work!

250 lb pick!

This tree was planted in the early 1950’s and its owner was an avid home brewer. The fact that these kumquats were going into a beer couldn’t have made these two women happier! An homage to a great father and husband.

250 lbs of beautiful ripe kumquats.

250 lbs of beautiful ripe kumquats.

We are thrilled to bring bottles of Kumquat Saison to market for the first time and provide awareness and generate financial proceeds to the generous and selfless folks at Food Forward; a small thanks to those who have worked tirelessly to bring these delicious orange gems to our doorstep.

So what’s it like up there in the trees?

Don’t let these elegant bottles fool you; it’s not all glam and glory…after each pick we looked like we had recently brought home a new kitten or perhaps 10 kittens and become their personal scratching posts. Scratches run long lines down our arms and hands. Soot covers our fingers and our calves ache from straining on top of a 16ft orchard ladder for that clump of perfectly ripened kumquats always just about out of reach.

Once the kumquats were harvested the work continued. All fruit that came in had to be quadruple washed with stems and leaves removed. An oversized chest freezer was purchased to house them but that quickly proved inadequate to meet the volume that continued to roll in from backyards all across the city. Kumquats were stored in the hop freezer, the employee’s kitchen freezer, and in Chris’ lab freezer. At every turn, kumquats seemed omnipresent in the brewery. It sure seemed like a good idea when we started. When it was time to process them for the beer, all of the boxes were moved to the walk-in and the smell was intoxicating. The beautiful kumquat aroma filled the walk-in with Promise.

Ready for processing!

Ready for processing!

Immersion blending 800 lbs of kumquats, one bucket at a time.

Go time! Porter, Dan and Chris spent a day blending the kumquats and adding them to the fermentor. More and more until the blended puree had reached the manway door and the guys had to call it quits. Young L.A. Saison was racked on top and the Saison yeast got back to work. Turning the sugars from the kumquats into aromas and delicious fruit character. 3 weeks later…the beer is now ready to bottle.

Kumquat Saison has proven to be one of the most labor intensive beers brewed at Smog City and considering our track record for pushing the envelop, that says a lot. Many of our beers are labors of love (Coffee Porter, Mulberry Saison, and Little Bo Pils to name a few) and require far greater manpower and time than you’d probably guess but the ultimate reward is to put into your hand a glass of beer so unique, so beautifully balanced, that the hard work speaks for itself.

We hope you seek out this collaboration beer and share it with your friends. Spread the word about Food Forward and possibly sign up your own fruit trees. We all have the opportunity to make a mark on the community and world around us, we all have an obligation to give back when we can and sometimes the smallest move can make a huge impact on someone else’s life.

So, buy a bottle, raise a glass and thank the fruit trees for their abundant fruit and Food Forward for putting these fabulous kumquats into our hands and think “Smog City ” when you enjoy this beer!

growing our brand and spreading the word

This year has been a big one for Smog…but I feel like I say that every year.

With the addition of our second taproom, Smog City at SteelCraft in Bixby Knolls, and the construction of our amazing(and gigantic) Sour Cellar, we’ve felt like we’ve spent the last year trying to tame a wild horse. Porter and I have had to grow and learn from all of these new experiences in ways we never could have predicted. It’s fun. It’s scary. It’s exhausting and it’s rewarding.

So we’ve been asking ourselves, what will 2018 bring?

At home base, we’re in the midst of the largest expansion of our brewery’s since we opened in Torrance nearly 4.5 years ago. The South Cellar’s construction is well under way- giving new promise to increased limited and seasonal beers as well as our beloved year round releases like Little Bo, Smog City IPA, Sabre-Toothed Squirrel and Coffee Porter (My unabashed favorite) and then there’s the impending arrival of our “big boy” bottling line. It’s crazy to think that 2018 will see Smog City in 6 packs. <mind blown>

We’ve been watching the market and believe strongly that craft beer is finally making the shift from luxury to lifestyle. The introduction of 6 packs by many local craft breweries points to a decline of the single bottle sales(mostly year round beers, not special releases) and an increase in 6 packs- what we call “fridge beer”. This is a shift that we welcome with open arms at Smog.

Our “father’s beer” may be different from our own personal “go-tos” but the loyalty he felt towards his favorite beer is not that much different from your support for local taprooms….with so many choices in the market, your safe place is in the arms of your favorite brewery or breweries. We hope to be the “go-to” for many beer lovers in SoCal, a tried and true brewery that brews stellar beers while still testing and pushing the envelop.

So besides the construction, the 6 packs, the taproom in 2018, our highly anticipated sour program will finally hit its stride. Look for m0re releases of delicious wild and sour barrel-aged goodness, flowing in our taproom and available in small batch releases in the coming year. These experiments, and awesome triumphs, will allow us to push our creativity further.

This year some fan and brewery staff favorites included: A purple carrot and thyme sour called IT’S CARROT THYME!, TYPE OH NEGATIVE, a white wine barrel-aged blonde with black currants, rosemary, and juniper and, of course, the ever delicious and seasonal BRIX LAYER, a sour blonde blended with Riesling juice from our collaborators in Escondido, J. Brix Wines. This beer is directly linked to the wine harvest each year, leading to a “window of opportunity” and a flurry of activity as the grapes are harvested, crushed and rushed to our brewery for addition. A liquid reflection of the year’s harvest.

Our primary focus has always been on the beers, expressing creativity in the brewery and in our beers, but this year we have focused some of our attention on growing a sustainable company. One that prides itself on the quality of its product and the wealth of its culture: We are committed to supporting our staff who work so hard to help us realize our vision.

In 2017, we added a bunch of new employees to the Smog family! Tim Harbage, Cesar Alfaro, Toby Sandland, Josh Pickett, Eddie Padilla, Gabriel Velarde, Sawyer Fox, and Sam Pennington. We’re now totaling 26 employees! Amazing.

In July, we became a proud member of 1% for the Planet, committing 1% of our gross sales in wholesale and the Torrance taproom to non-profits that support and protect the environment. To promote those partnerships, we launched our Pints with Purpose series and so far we’ve partnered with Keep a Breast, Aquarium of the Pacific and our long standing partner, Food Forward! I love seeing the taproom bustling on Thursdays, together we are raising money while raising a glass of independent craft beer. And I especially enjoy the fun experiences our partners bring to the taproom. In November, we even had jellies as our special visitors!! You had to see it to believe it.

Smog City has always felt strongly about our impact on the environment; reuse, recycle, and reclaim have been a part of our brand since we started. Pushing into giving back directly to non-profits is a new route and one that may seem out there, but it feels so “Smoggy”! As always, we forge our own path..often cutting through the weeds to get there.

Smog City is deeply invested in our beers, our staff, our community, our environment- in an ever increasing determination to have a genuine impact on the world. If that is what we have achieved, even on a small scale, then we are proud to be Smog City.

Cheers and thank you for your support!

Laurie and Porter

Surviving Smog’s Anniversary Event- Saturday, May 21st

Halfway through 2016 already and so much has happened. See the images below to see how we looked this time 2013 compared to last week. It’s definitely a little more crowded in here…in three years, not much has changed, right?! 🙂
BreweryTimeLapse TaproomTimelapse

Saturday May 21st, 2016 11am-10pm

Ready? Deep breath. Let’s go….
Smog City has been experiencing expansion in all directions: we’ve grown our Beer Family from 7 team members to 14, we’re celebrating the expansion of our Torrance brewery’s footprint from 11,000sq ft to 22,000q ft(!!), plus our GABF 2015 and World Beer Cup 2016 Silvers!, 7 medals between L.A. International Beer Competition and San Diego International, an epic collaboration with Beer Camp Across America including Beachwood Brewing, Bagby, Society, Lost Abbey and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, fulfilling and long-lasting partnerships with organizations like Food Forward and L.A. Derby Dolls, and to top it off, the announcement of our anxiously anticipated satellite taproom, Smog City Steelcraft in Long Beach/Bixby Knolls.
Incurable Optimist.
Each year we brew a special limited released bottled beer to celebrate another year of delicious Smog City beer. Incurable Optimist is our 2016 Anniversary beer named by Laurie(who IS an Incurable Optimist) to reflect the wild and crazy ride these past 5 years have been for Smog City and an even more exciting future than we ever anticipated. For us here at Smog, this year feels like a tipping point from small budding local business to recognized brand.
Incurable Optimist – Tart Wild Wheat w/Citrus

 5.3% abv

Our 2016 anniversary ale started life as a tart Belgian style Wit that co-fermented with 3 strains of Brettanomyces. We then blended in several choice barrels of 2 year old white wine barrel aged sour blonde. A 3rd fermentation in the bottle with a 4th Brett strain will deliver more complexity as it ages.

Citrus dominates the aroma with lemon, orange, and tangerine while coriander, white wine, and funk linger in the background. Expect a bright hit of tart citrus up front, then stone fruit, vitamin C, and subtle oak in the finish.

There is much to be thankful for and the future looks bright to the “Incurable Optimist” regardless of the insanity that prevails on the fringes.  Drink to the future today or lay this baby down and watch it mature in its complexity and depth.

More Space!

We will be expanding the taproom into our adjacent space which means MORE ROOM FOR YOU and more room for more beers! Farm to Pint- Mulberry Saison

This Mulberry Saison exemplifies all the nuances of our brewery’s mission: to expand and build upon the creativity inherent in brewing beer, to build partnerships within our community and to react to the seasons with beers designed to excite your palate.

For the 2nd consecutive year we will be releasing Mulberry Saison for the taproom and although we are not making nearly enough…we’re celebrate that this batch is twice the size of last years! 80 gallons of this extremely rare fruited version of our L.A. Saison was refermented with 100 lbs of Weiser Family Farm mulberries and will be pouring in our taproom this Thursday.

The result is a slightly hazy ruby colored beer with a delicate balance between yeast derived esters and unripe cherries, raspberry, and an earthy raisin like character.

Our goal was to make a fruit beer like no other and in using Mulberries, we sought balance between base beer and fruit contribution.

Join us this week as we tap the 3rd in our series of 4 fruited Saisons: Peach Saison, Apricot Saison and Mulberry Saison.

Kumquat Saison brewed in collaboration with L.A.’s Food Forward will be released next week.

one try, two tries, three tries…FOUR! High Five, Bro!

Anniversary Beer 2015!

Steamfunk Brett IPA

What the heck is this?! Each year we choose the Anniversary beer style based on a couple of questions. 1. What’s gets the brewers excited? 2. We’re always looking for a new challenge! 3. Porter brewed a pilot batch a few months back and we tested it out in our taproom. General consensus was double thumbs up. In fact, we kicked 10 gals on a Wednesday night…the people have spoken.

Steamfunk Brett IPA was born. We emphasize the FUNK in Steamfunk. It’s one crazy, hoppy, funky complex work of beer art. Brewed as a team by the Smog City crew.

Much Hops and Much “Bretts” which makes it Much Delicious!

Steamfunk Brett IPA
6.8% abv
This golden IPA was fermented with Brettanomyces and dry-hopped with experimental hops to amp the Brett fueled funk.
Expect pineapple, melon, ripe cheese, papaya and subtle sweet lemon above the earthy, and yes, funky flavors that Brett lends to this beer.

Goldie Bottle Release- October 11th, 2014 12-8pm

SATURDAY Oct 11th, 12-8pm

Smog City Brewing

1901 Del Amo Blvd Ste B

Torrance, CA 90501

Towering above the taproom are the legions of barrels we’ve acquired over the last year plus. You’ve been watching them slumber…bellies filled with infinite potential. This Saturday, some of that potential is revealed in our first barrel series bottle release, GOLDIE.

Meet GOLDIE, our bourbon barrel-aged Belgian strong ale aged in barrels for 5 months boasts aromas and flavors of coconut, vanilla, and bourbon combined with banana and ripe tropical fruit esters to create a massively complex and balanced barrel-aged beer. Each bottle has a handwritten label that includes the beer name, abv, bottled on date and the bottle number.

What’s on tap, yo?!

Glad you asked! A line up of incredibly delicious and limited beers will also be available this Saturday! Smoked Smaug Lager returns as our Fall Seasonal! This beer is incredible with pretzels…nay, life changing. Tapping Wet Hop Hoptonic IPA with Columbus and Centennial grown on the vines outside our brewery’s front door, Atomic 82 -Batch 1 and Batch 2, the un-aged versions of Goldie brewed in March and September respectively.

Why is it called Atomic 82? What a weird name! Well, yes, it is but we love the science of and play on alchemy. In alchemy you run across the three “defining objectives…historically having typically included one or more of the following goals: the creation of the fabled philosopher’s stone(NAH!); the ability to transmute base metals(lead) into the noble metals (gold or silver); and development of an elixir of life, which would confer youth and longevity.”(Wiki)

With Atomic 82 and Goldie, we’ve achieved two of the three!! Turned lead (Atomic number 82) into gold (Goldie) and created an elixir of life! IOHO

You’ll have a chance to taste Atomic 82- Batch 1 which became the barrel-aged version you’ll be getting in bottles and on draft and Atomic 82- Batch 2, which was just brewed and put into barrels last month!

Geeking out aside…is that even possible?!
