Smog City Welcomes Head Brewer Tim Harbage

tim1

As Smog City continues to grow, we have found it increasingly important to put into place systems and organizational elements that allow us to build brand while maintaining our focus and commitment to quality over quantity. Smog City prides itself on organic and conscientious growth with a heavy lean on the culture within our company first and foremost. We are excited to welcome Tim Harbage to the family as our new Head Brewer.

Tim brings to the table a true passion and dedication to not only the quality of the beer but the cohesiveness of the team. We are beyond excited to give him the opportunity to help us set in place the organization and logistical systems needed to grow our business from a small two-person team in 2011 to a robust and successful beer family of 18 here in 2016. The Smog City environment is designed to give a safe and nurturing place to those that prioritize quality, creativity and innovation over all else. Tim has that passion and that drive to build a stronger more passionate team and we welcome him with open arms into the Smog City fold.

Finished 2013!

Five years ago Smog City launched out of a small brewpub in Tustin, CA. In our first year, we produced and sold 240 bbls of beer to the L.A. market, hand picking select craft beer bars and restaurants that heralded our creativity, quality and reflected our own attention to building a strong craft beer community. One and a half years later, we opened in Torrance, CA to a “gigantic” 5,500 sq ft facility and a 450 sq ft taproom. To our surprise, it did not take long to outgrow this space and in the last nine months, we have expanded our square footage to 22,000 sq ft, dwarfing our original space.

Much of the planned growth is to facilitate distribution and to grow the exciting Sour Program that Porter has always been extremely passionate about. With some of the weight of running day to day production, logistical standards, overseeing brewers and maintaining inventory lifted; Porter will be able to return to exploring his passion for sour and barrel-aging. In the new space, we have a 2300 sq ft barrel room dedicated exclusively to barrel-aging our already established Sour Program. The temperature and humidity controlled room will give us increased control over the process and allow us to nearly double our current barrel count.

img_9963

The second stage of expansion will be focused on growing our production in the current space from 4000 bbl to approximately 12,000 over the next five years. Slow and steady growth allows us to continue to put in place the best staff and maintain quality control measures to ensure that our brand and beers remain consistently balanced, creative and reflective of who we are and why.

Bringing on Tim allows Porter to continue to grow the creative side of Smog City and push through to new styles, new approaches while developing innovative procedures to achieve the unique beers that Smog City is known for – beers like Brix Layer that combines wine juice and barrel-aged sour beer in collaboration with J Brix Winery, our Cuddlebug and Snugglebug fruited sour blondes, as well as our collaborations with producers and businesses that push for innovation and community awareness like Food Forward, Weiser Family Farms, and Beer Camp with Sierra Nevada Brewing.

img_8263

With our satellite taproom, Smog City at SteelCraft on the horizon, Smog City’s direct to consumer reach will increase, allowing us to expand the brand, build on our brewery’s consumer education focus and expand upon the opportunity for consumer feedback in multiple locations regarding pilot beers, experimental beers and our core beers. Smog City at SteelCraft is set to open Mid Dec alongside 6 food vendors with a communal sitting area.

Tim’s passion and enthusiasm for beer and the craft beer community are hard to match, which when combined with his engineering background and his strong experience growing young breweries, like Golden Road, will be instrumental in helping us to continue to innovate our already unique approaches to beer production. We are very proud to be a family-owned brewery and look forward to having Tim as part of our team.

“Tap Attack” and it’s Origin

The benefits of being small manifest in our agility to create unique beers, our creativity and our flexibility to make s#!t up.

Over 2 years ago, Porter decided that the term Tap Takeover wasn’t the most accurate name for an event unless you were truly taking over all of the taps. Porter is a man of precision and it’s not a game of semantics here, it’s a quest for concise communication. So I asked Porter for an alternative and “Tap Attack” instantly came rolling out of his mouth.

We both knew immediately we had something awesome. Now, it seems small and insignificant but like making great beer, it’s all about the details. It’s all about those little bits and pieces you hold dear and you know deep in your heart, that they belong to you.

But even as the originators of the term Tap Attack, we hold the line by a string…why? Well, here’s the kicker…we’re tiny. Very few craft beer drinkers across the nation know about us, YET. All it takes is for one big guy to use it and we’ve lost our hold of the term.

After attending the Craft Brewer’s Conference(CBC) this year, it was really hammered home just how small we are. In our first year, we distributed 240 bbl of beer. In our second year, a little over 900 bbl and this year, we’re targeting 2500 bbl.

So as a small fry, we’re clinging to the opportunities we have to make small waves. We released one of SoCal’s first year-round Saisons 3 years ago (name another from 2012…), we helped make a name for Coffee Porters(yes, everyone has one now) before Coffee Porters were a thing and we killed it with our MakeOut Session Pale Ale (which was previously known as Smog City XPA)…a sessionable beer in the lull before Sessionable was even a well-known word.

So when you see Tap Attack…think Smog City. Know that David V. Goliath is still well and good and fighting the good fight for notoriety and that we’re devoted to making your craft beer experience unique and exceptional.

Cheers and thanks for your support!

Laurie

Specialty Beers Exploding in the Taproom!!

photo-12

Over the last year we’ve brewed well over 100 different beers both experimental, core and one-offs. Many of them have become fan favorites and our locals and weekend visitors ask for growlers fills. Of course when you’re looking at a single keg, growler fills are impossible but we’ve heard your calls and requests and are trying to bring more specialty growler fills to the taproom.

Our first in this excursion is the DEATH BY HOPS Double IPA. Utilizing our 15bbl fermentor, we’ve created a beer that will have extremely limited distribution. In fact, we’re sending out only 8 kegs into the L.A. market. Of course, not every one of our best accounts can get this beer(and we have many) but the limited few that we’ve approached have promised to tap it this weekend for ultimate freshness. Here’s a list of the locations you can find the Death By Hops, assuming you don’t come directly to the source…our taproom. We’ve attended to make it so that you’ll be able to find it spread nicely across L.A.

Growler fills, full pours and tasters still available in our taproom.

And while we have your attention, next up in the specialty taproom release and growler fill beer line up is WEIRD BEER, Belgian Blonde with herbs and spices! To add even more complexity to this spiced beer than the last time, Porter is adding some new fresh herbs straight from the local Torrrance farmers market. We originally poured this beer in the taproom when we opened a year ago and it had a constant and loyal fan following. If you have yet to try it, believe us, it’s a keeper!

We should be brewing WEIRD BEER next week, so keep your eyes on our Facebook and mailing list for the official release.  It’s one of our most food friendly beers and will continue to satisfy your food pairing needs! Growler Fills will be available.

Keep an eye out for future taproom and growler release beers! We’re trying to up the ante and get you some awesome beers to take home and share with friends and family. Fingers crossed for Hoptango IPA and a fruited Saison sooooooon.

Cheers!

GrapeApe IPA, A Creative Process

GrapeApe-Muscat

UPDATE: 1/2/14:

This delicious concoction is just now getting the traction we hoped to see in 2013! 2014 is gonna be a good year! Keep your eyes peeled for one of the top 3 beers of 2013 according to LA Times beer writer John Verive who named GrapeApe IPA alongside Noble’s Naughty Sauce and GRB’s Heal The Bay IPA in his Three Most Important Beers of Southern California article.

Coming out later this month is our extremely limited release, Batch 100. A Double IPA made with Viogner grapes to celebrate 100 brews in the new Torrance facility. Batch 100 will be available in our taproom and in limited release to select accounts across the L.A. area.

Pasadena and Eastside Folks! We have a beer dinner Feb 6th at King’s Row Gastropub that will have Batch 100 on for one of its courses. Check in with them for availability and reservations.

King’s Row: 20 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91105       626.793.3010

Now back to your previously televised program…

There’s something you need to know about Smog City and our new beer, GrapeApe IPA…we’re pushing the boundaries and this isn’t the first time.

When Porter first created the recipe for Groundwork Coffee Porter a little over two years ago, very few were doing coffee beers and even less were doing them well. Now, coffee beers are all the rage. They are delicious and amazing and honestly, the best of both worlds. Good news is Smog City, Porter and his crew are doing it again but this time with wine grapes in an IPA.

Who in their right mind would think to combine wine grapes with IPA? Well, one brewery leaps off the tip of my tongue. The ever experimenting Dogfish Head and their Sixty-One IPA made with Syrah Grapes….this beer got Porter and his assistants talking. Why NOT make IPAs with wine grapes? The grapes add berry and fruit esters that hops cannot. They also pair amazingly well with the more unique hops that we are trying out. And thus GrapeApe IPA was born.

We are designing and redesigning this beer. Each time we brew it, we will be using different grape varietals, adding them at different points during the brewing and fermentation process until we hone in on the perfect, not-to-be-out-done, most delicious version of GrapeApe IPA.

And that means that as we brew GrapeApe it will change; the GrapeApe you had one month ago may not be the same GrapeApe you have next month but rest assured, we will not release a GrapeApe that is anything less than STELLAR! In addition, YOU get to be apart of the process. You will have an opportunity to experience the evolution and the process of creation while enjoying a delicious beer! You may have your own personal favorites along the way but hopefully, you’ll enjoy each one for its own unique qualities.

We don’t know of any other brewery to open up the creative process to the public like this but we’re not afraid to share our successes with you! It’s about the journey, not the destination…okay, it’s also about the destination…but we thrive on challenges and adventures and the crafting of beers. That’s what makes beer so amazing; it’s alive and it should be ever changing. So enjoy the ride, we aim to take you on a good one!

GrapeApe IPA with Muscat – 8.1% abc

This GrapeApe IPA is currently available in our taproom…but not for long.  Most assume that the muscat lends a sweetness to the beer but of course, the hungry yeast loves sugar and so the result was a drier IPA than our other two IPAs and a higher ABV; GrapeApe clocks in at 8.1%.

Expect a huge bouquet of tropical hop aroma with notes of lychee, mango, and candied lemon peel. Belgian Pilsner malt and wheat lend a light bread crust character to complement the tropical hop and Muscat berry flavors.

GrapeApe IPA with Chardonnay – 7.4% abv

An experimental IPA brewed with Chardonnay grape juice and features Australian Topaz and Simcoe hops

Expect a huge bouquet of fruity tropical hop aromas with notes of pear, mango, and light spice. Chardonnay contributes peach and pear flavors while Belgian pilsner and wheat malts add cracker and bread crust to lightly sweet malt and a soft bitter finish.

We’ve dropped the growler price for the current GrapeApe IPA with Muscat to $18! Come see us in our taproom, we’ve got GrapeApe IPA with Chardonnay on deck! Come and help us blow through the first batch so we can get the new one on line! GrapeApe IPA is regularly $22 for growler fills.

Also, be sure to check out the Los Angeles IPA Festival at Mohawk Bend this weekend! It’s a competition to see whose IPA will bring home the win. We’ve entered GrapeApe IPA with Chardonnay. Believe us, this event is worth attending!
