“Tap Attack” and it’s Origin

The benefits of being small manifest in our agility to create unique beers, our creativity and our flexibility to make s#!t up.

Over 2 years ago, Porter decided that the term Tap Takeover wasn’t the most accurate name for an event unless you were truly taking over all of the taps. Porter is a man of precision and it’s not a game of semantics here, it’s a quest for concise communication. So I asked Porter for an alternative and “Tap Attack” instantly came rolling out of his mouth.

We both knew immediately we had something awesome. Now, it seems small and insignificant but like making great beer, it’s all about the details. It’s all about those little bits and pieces you hold dear and you know deep in your heart, that they belong to you.

But even as the originators of the term Tap Attack, we hold the line by a string…why? Well, here’s the kicker…we’re tiny. Very few craft beer drinkers across the nation know about us, YET. All it takes is for one big guy to use it and we’ve lost our hold of the term.

After attending the Craft Brewer’s Conference(CBC) this year, it was really hammered home just how small we are. In our first year, we distributed 240 bbl of beer. In our second year, a little over 900 bbl and this year, we’re targeting 2500 bbl.

So as a small fry, we’re clinging to the opportunities we have to make small waves. We released one of SoCal’s first year-round Saisons 3 years ago (name another from 2012…), we helped make a name for Coffee Porters(yes, everyone has one now) before Coffee Porters were a thing and we killed it with our MakeOut Session Pale Ale (which was previously known as Smog City XPA)…a sessionable beer in the lull before Sessionable was even a well-known word.

So when you see Tap Attack…think Smog City. Know that David V. Goliath is still well and good and fighting the good fight for notoriety and that we’re devoted to making your craft beer experience unique and exceptional.

Cheers and thanks for your support!

Specialty Beers Exploding in the Taproom!!

photo-12

Over the last year we’ve brewed well over 100 different beers both experimental, core and one-offs. Many of them have become fan favorites and our locals and weekend visitors ask for growlers fills. Of course when you’re looking at a single keg, growler fills are impossible but we’ve heard your calls and requests and are trying to bring more specialty growler fills to the taproom.

Our first in this excursion is the DEATH BY HOPS Double IPA. Utilizing our 15bbl fermentor, we’ve created a beer that will have extremely limited distribution. In fact, we’re sending out only 8 kegs into the L.A. market. Of course, not every one of our best accounts can get this beer(and we have many) but the limited few that we’ve approached have promised to tap it this weekend for ultimate freshness. Here’s a list of the locations you can find the Death By Hops, assuming you don’t come directly to the source…our taproom. We’ve attended to make it so that you’ll be able to find it spread nicely across L.A.

Growler fills, full pours and tasters still available in our taproom.

And while we have your attention, next up in the specialty taproom release and growler fill beer line up is WEIRD BEER, Belgian Blonde with herbs and spices! To add even more complexity to this spiced beer than the last time, Porter is adding some new fresh herbs straight from the local Torrrance farmers market. We originally poured this beer in the taproom when we opened a year ago and it had a constant and loyal fan following. If you have yet to try it, believe us, it’s a keeper!

We should be brewing WEIRD BEER next week, so keep your eyes on our Facebook and mailing list for the official release.  It’s one of our most food friendly beers and will continue to satisfy your food pairing needs! Growler Fills will be available.

Keep an eye out for future taproom and growler release beers! We’re trying to up the ante and get you some awesome beers to take home and share with friends and family. Fingers crossed for Hoptango IPA and a fruited Saison sooooooon.

Cheers!

Please do not park in Doggie Daycare’s parking spaces. We have approval from the businesses to the west of us. You are welcome to use their parking spaces both in front of and behind their building. Also available is street parking on the south side of Del Amo Blvd and up and down Gramercy Pl.

Respect our Neighbors!

When you are leaving the brewery, please be respectful and keep your voices and car radios turned down. Doggie Daycare is a 24 hour boarding facility and we want to play nice with our puppy-loving friends.

See you at the Brewery!! And thank you so much for welcoming us with open arms (and mouths) into the local beer community! We’re honored to be apart of it!

Anniversary Beer Brew Day

To celebrate our anniversary coming up on the 17th of May, our Smog City staff got together to brew a special release!

Anni, as we affectionately refer to it, is a Strong Saison brewed with Merlot. We used Galaxy and Meridian hops, with wheat, pilsner and oats. A light pinkish hue and delicious Belgian character will set this beer apart.

Here’s a look at our brew day! Not pictured: Laurie, but she was most certainly there doing hop additions, making coffee and taking all of these photos!

Join us May 17th 12-8pm for our Anniversary Event at the brewery. We’ll be releasing Anni as well as other special limited releases (to be announced) plus a Limited Anniversary Growler with a new design!! It’s gonna knock your socks off. And if that’s not enough, we are anticipating a major announcement that will coincide with this event, but we’re not quite ready to let you in on that little secret…not quite yet.

RSVP on our Facebook event page to learn about updates on this event.

Our 3rd Grape Ape IPA is Here

Update 2/25/14

Our 3rd Version oF Grape Ape IPA is here!

GrapeApe IPA

Grape Ape IPA-Semillon – 7.4% abv

The 3rd installment of our experimental IPA brewed with Semillon grape juice and features Australian Topaz and Mosaic hops. Expect a huge bouquet of fruity tropical hop aromas with notes of pear, mango, and perfume-like spice.

Semillon contributes peach and pear flavors while German Kolsch malt and wheat adds cracker and bread crust along with light toast to a soft bitter finish.

Last Sunday we kegged Grape Ape IPA for the L.A. Beer Blogger Summit held at Smog City’s taproom. While enjoying the company of some 45 local beer bloggers, all of which were sipping on Smog City’s offerings, we learned a little from Bernie Wire of Friends of Local Beer, Tyler Graham of Stone Marketing, Josh Liberman and Smog City’s own Laurie Porter.

The big take away was: use your photography in the same way you use words. Tell a story and you’ll successfully engage your fans and viewers. Shoot Away!!!

Smog V. Fog = California Love

We like seeing things come full circle and partnering with 21st Amendment’s head brewer Zambo is one of those moments. Going way way back, Zambo worked at BJs Brea when Porter first launched into the craft beer industry 8 years ago. Porter was fresh out of the American Brewer’s Guild and found himself cleaning kegs at BJs Brea. Soon after Zambo transferred from BJs Woodland Hills to Brea where they worked together until Porter was promoted to assistant brewer in Oxnard. Now they head up their own outstanding breweries and have come together in Smog City’s first official collaboration.

Featuring wine character from wine country and citrus from SoCal, California Love is a collaboration designed to bring the best of NorCal and SoCal together.

Califronia Love is an Imperial Red brewed with pinot noir must, citrus peel and aged on oak chips. This highly hopped red clocks in at 9.6% ABV. On tap beginning this Thursday in the Smog City Taproom!

Here’s a look at the Collaboration Brew Day.

Look at the color of that beer! The Pinot darkened it considerably from this color.
