SURVIVING (and enjoying) OUR ANNIVERSARY

Saturday May 21st, 2016 11am-10pm

II
Ready? Deep breath. Let’s go….
II
EK8A0151-SM
Smog City has been experiencing¬†expansion¬†in all directions:¬†we’ve grown our Beer Family from 7 team members to 14, we’re celebrating the expansion of our Torrance brewery’s footprint from 11,000sq ft to 22,000q ft(!!), plus¬†our GABF 2015 and World Beer Cup 2016 Silvers!, 7 medals between L.A. International Beer Competition and San Diego International, an epic collaboration with¬†Beer Camp Across America¬†including Beachwood Brewing, Bagby, Society, Lost Abbey and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co, fulfilling and long-lasting partnerships with organizations¬†like Food Forward¬†and L.A. Derby Dolls, and to top it off, the announcement of¬†our anxiously anticipated¬†satellite taproom, Smog City Steelcraft¬†in Long Beach/Bixby Knolls.
II
Incurable Optimist.
Each year we brew a special limited released bottled beer to celebrate another year of delicious Smog City beer. Incurable Optimist is our 2016 Anniversary beer named by Laurie(who IS an Incurable Optimist) to reflect the wild and crazy ride these past 5 years have been for Smog City and an even more exciting future than we ever anticipated. For us here at Smog, this year feels like a tipping point from small budding local business to recognized brand.
 II
Incurable Optimist – Tart Wild Wheat w/Citrus

 5.3% abv

Our 2016 anniversary ale started life as a tart Belgian style Wit that co-fermented with 3 strains of Brettanomyces. We then blended in several choice barrels of 2 year old white wine barrel aged sour blonde. A 3rd fermentation in the bottle with a 4th Brett strain will deliver more complexity as it ages.

Citrus dominates the aroma with lemon, orange, and tangerine while coriander, white wine, and funk linger in the background. Expect a bright hit of tart citrus up front, then stone fruit, vitamin C, and subtle oak in the finish.

II
There is much to be thankful for and the future looks bright to the “Incurable Optimist” regardless of the insanity that prevails on the fringes. ¬†Drink to the future today or lay this baby down and watch it mature in its complexity and depth.
 II

More Space!

We will be expanding the taproom into our adjacent space which means MORE ROOM FOR YOU and more room for more beers! Specialty Beers Exploding in the Taproom!!

photo-12

Over the last year we’ve brewed well over 100 different beers both experimental, core and one-offs. Many of them have become fan favorites and our locals and weekend visitors ask for growlers fills. Of course when you’re looking at a single keg, growler fills are impossible but we’ve heard your calls and requests and are trying to bring more specialty growler fills to the taproom.

Our first in this excursion is the DEATH BY HOPS Double IPA. Utilizing our 15bbl fermentor, we’ve created a beer that will have extremely limited distribution. In fact, we’re sending out only 8 kegs into the L.A. market. Of course, not every one of our best accounts can get this beer(and we have many) but the limited few that we’ve approached have promised to tap it this weekend for ultimate freshness. Here’s a list of the locations you can find the Death By Hops, assuming you don’t come directly to the source‚Ķour taproom. We’ve attended to make it so that you’ll be able to find it spread nicely across L.A.

Growler fills, full pours and tasters still available in our taproom.

Where to find Death By Hops in L.A.

Kings Row

Naja’s Place (for the IPA Fest on June 25th)

And while we have your attention, next up in the specialty taproom release and growler fill beer line up¬†is WEIRD BEER, Belgian Blonde with herbs and spices! To add even more complexity to this spiced beer than the last time, Porter is adding some new fresh herbs straight from the local Torrrance farmers market.¬†We originally poured this beer in the taproom when we opened a year ago and it had a constant and loyal fan following. If you have yet to try it, believe us, it’s a keeper!

We should be brewing¬†WEIRD BEER¬†next week, so keep your eyes on our Facebook and mailing list for the official release. ¬†It’s one of our most food friendly beers and will continue to satisfy your food pairing needs! Growler Fills will be available.

Keep an eye out for future taproom and growler release beers! We’re trying to up the ante and get you some awesome beers to take home and share with friends and family. Fingers crossed for Hoptango IPA and a fruited Saison sooooooon.

Cheers!

Anniversary Beer Brew Day

To celebrate our anniversary coming up on the 17th of May, our Smog City staff got together to brew a special release!

Anni, as we affectionately refer to it, is a Strong Saison brewed with Merlot. We used Galaxy and Meridian hops, with wheat, pilsner and oats. A light pinkish hue and delicious Belgian character will set this beer apart.

Here’s a look at our brew day! Not pictured: Laurie, but she was most certainly there doing hop additions, making coffee and taking all of these photos!

Join us May 17th 12-8pm for our Anniversary Event at the brewery. We’ll be releasing Anni¬†as well as other special limited releases (to be announced) plus a Limited Anniversary Growler with a new design!! It’s gonna knock your socks off.¬†And if that’s not enough, we are anticipating a major announcement that will coincide with this event, but we’re not quite ready to let you in on that little secret‚Ķnot quite yet.

RSVP on our Facebook event page to learn about updates on this event.

Our 3rd Grape Ape IPA is Here

Update 2/25/14

Our 3rd Version oF Grape Ape IPA is here!

GrapeApe IPA

Grape Ape IPA-Semillon –¬†7.4% abv

The 3rd installment of our experimental IPA brewed with Semillon grape juice and features Australian Topaz and Mosaic hops. Expect a huge bouquet of fruity tropical hop aromas with notes of pear, mango, and perfume-like spice.

Semillon contributes peach and pear flavors while German Kolsch malt and wheat adds cracker and bread crust along with light toast to a soft bitter finish.

Last Sunday we kegged Grape Ape IPA for the L.A. Beer Blogger Summit held at Smog City’s taproom. While enjoying the company of some 45 local beer bloggers, all of which were sipping on Smog City’s offerings, we learned a little from Bernie Wire of Friends of Local Beer, Tyler Graham of Stone Marketing, Josh Liberman and Smog City’s own Laurie Porter.

The big take away was: use your photography in the same way you use words. Tell a story and you’ll successfully engage your fans and viewers. Shoot Away!!!

GrapeApe IPA, A Creative Process

GrapeApe-Muscat

UPDATE: 1/2/14:

This delicious concoction is just now getting the traction we hoped to see in 2013! 2014 is gonna be a good year! Keep your eyes peeled for one of the top 3 beers of 2013 according to LA Times beer writer John Verive who named GrapeApe IPA alongside Noble’s Naughty Sauce and GRB’s Heal The Bay IPA in his Three Most Important Beers of Southern California article.

Coming out later this month is our extremely limited release, Batch 100. A Double IPA made with Viogner grapes to celebrate 100 brews in the new Torrance facility. Batch 100 will be available in our taproom and in limited release to select accounts across the L.A. area.

Pasadena and Eastside Folks! We have a beer dinner Feb 6th at King’s Row Gastropub that will have Batch 100 on for one of its courses. Check in with them for availability and reservations. ¬†

King’s Row:¬†20 E. Colorado Blvd.,¬†Pasadena, CA 91105 ¬† ¬† ¬†¬†626.793.3010

Now back to your previously televised program…

There’s something you need to know about Smog City and our new beer, GrapeApe IPA…we’re pushing the boundaries and this isn’t the first time.

When Porter first created the recipe for Groundwork Coffee Porter a little over two years ago, very few were doing coffee beers and even less were doing them well. Now, coffee beers are all the rage. They are delicious and amazing and honestly, the best of both worlds. Good news is Smog City, Porter and his crew are doing it again but this time with wine grapes in an IPA.

Who in their right mind would think to combine wine grapes with IPA? Well, one brewery leaps off the tip of my tongue. The ever experimenting Dogfish Head and their Sixty-One IPA made with Syrah Grapes….this beer got Porter and his assistants talking. Why NOT make IPAs with wine grapes? The grapes add berry and fruit esters that hops cannot. They also pair amazingly well with the more unique hops that we are trying out. And thus GrapeApe IPA was born.

We are designing and redesigning this beer. Each time we brew it, we will be using different grape varietals, adding them at different points during the brewing and fermentation process until we hone in on the perfect, not-to-be-out-done, most delicious version of GrapeApe IPA.

And that means that as we brew GrapeApe it will change; the GrapeApe you had one month ago may not be the same GrapeApe you have next month but rest assured, we will not release a GrapeApe that is anything less than STELLAR! In addition, YOU get to be apart of the process. You will have an opportunity to experience the evolution and the process of creation while enjoying a delicious beer! You may have your own personal favorites along the way but hopefully, you’ll enjoy each one for its own unique qualities.

We don’t know of any other brewery to open up the creative process to the public like this but we’re not afraid to share our successes with you! It’s about the journey, not the destination…okay, it’s also about the destination…but we thrive on challenges and adventures and the crafting of beers. That’s what makes beer so amazing; it’s alive and it should be ever changing. So enjoy the ride, we aim to take you on a good one!

GrapeApe IPA with Muscat – 8.1% abc

This GrapeApe IPA is currently available in our taproom…but not for long. ¬†Most assume that the muscat lends a sweetness to the beer but of course, the hungry yeast loves sugar and so the result was a drier IPA than our other two IPAs and a higher ABV; GrapeApe clocks in at 8.1%.

Expect a huge bouquet of tropical hop aroma with notes of lychee, mango, and candied lemon peel. Belgian Pilsner malt and wheat lend a light bread crust character to complement the tropical hop and Muscat berry flavors.

GrapeApe IPA with Chardonnay – 7.4% abv

An experimental IPA brewed with Chardonnay grape juice and features Australian Topaz and Simcoe hops

Expect a huge bouquet of fruity tropical hop aromas with notes of pear, mango, and light spice. Chardonnay contributes peach and pear flavors while Belgian pilsner and wheat malts add cracker and bread crust to lightly sweet malt and a soft bitter finish.

We’ve dropped the growler price for the current GrapeApe IPA with Muscat to $18!¬†Come see us in our taproom, we’ve got GrapeApe IPA with Chardonnay on deck! Come and help us blow through the first batch so we can get the new one on line! GrapeApe IPA is regularly $22 for growler fills.

Also, be sure to check out the Los Angeles IPA Festival at Mohawk Bend this weekend! It’s a competition to see whose IPA will bring home the win. We’ve entered GrapeApe IPA with Chardonnay. Believe us, this event is worth attending!
